Evergreen Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum

In creating a new space it was important to preserve its 190 year history by incorporating the existing vaults and plaques into the design, honoring the individuals and their stories, while creating a space for families to celebrate life and find a home for new stories to dwell. Through the use of parallel lines the interior and exterior seamlessly flow into one another, with the warmth of the wood inside bringing a sense of peace and calm, the landscaping bringing life, and the marble and bronze accentuating the importance of the lives represented here.

Opportunities

The new structure needed to allow for light and the celebration of life while being respectful and providing privacy. The large windows and the light wood on the ceiling provided warmth, while the marble walls provided both privacy and a surface to reflect natural light in ways that are peaceful.

LIGHT

The new structure needed to allow for light and the celebration of life while being respectful and providing privacy. The large windows and the light wood on the ceiling provided warmth, while the marble walls provided both privacy and a surface to reflect natural light in ways that are peaceful.

Incorporating existing structures meant accepting sharp corners, and pronounced lines. But the choice to mirror those shapes with wooden beams and wooden floors softened the experience, and provided a steady and structurally sound element to the building. You'll notice parallel and perpendicular lines on the floor, in the ceiling and along the walls of the mausoleum providing a sense of continuity.

BALANCE

Incorporating existing structures meant accepting sharp corners, and pronounced lines. But the choice to mirror those shapes with wooden beams and wooden floors softened the experience, and provided a steady and structurally sound element to the building. You'll notice parallel and perpendicular lines on the floor, in the ceiling and along the walls of the mausoleum providing a sense of continuity.

Blending existing structures that are filled with meaning and history, into new structures required finding ways to bring the outside in, and the inside out, in ways that felt both natural and respectful. By bringing vaults into the new structure there wouldn't be a separation of old and new but rather a continuation of stories from the community.
